Mr. Malcolm’s List is a witty tale of 19th-century London’s competitive marriage market, based on Suzanne Allain’s romantic novel of the same name. It’s understandable if the preceding sentence conjures up images of Netflix Bridgerton. Mr. Malcolm’s List, like that Regency-era show, serves up golden rituals and lessons in love and friendship in a multiracial, multicultural setting. However, there are hints of Jane Austen, as Mr. Malcolm’s List is more satirical than its obvious TV counterpart. While a sultry narrative fuels Bridgerton’s seasons, it is the strong performances of key supporting players that keep Mr. Malcolm’s List appealing.
