Sure, it’s an adaptation of the Broadway musical and you wonder, rightly, why they didn’t leave it there. The answer is obvious, for money. And because any vindication of what is not Anglo-Saxon white culture today is very well seen. What is not well seen is making good films, that is clear. The director of the film, Jon M. Chu, is responsible for another grotesque mess called Madly in Love (Crazy Rich Asians, 2018) and it seems that he has been declared an official spokesman for racial stereotypes.
The film follows a group of residents of the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York. Everyone sings as if it were a television commercial for a channel celebrating Latino culture in the United States for the end of the year. Maybe the movie is in English. The first musical number is horrible, as is the lyrics of the song, but the ones that follow are worse. Each song revolves around the same thing: vindication of the Latin effort in the United States.
