Shadow in the Cloud (2020), New Zealand film by director Roseanne Liang promises to be a thriller of confinement and terror with feminist content in its first part, but then it is shipwrecked between precarious special effects and a notion of verisimilitude that ends up being shot through.
At one point it’s a shame because the first half hour is really promising. Chloë Grace Moretz plays Maude Garrett, a young girl who apparently is a member of the New Zealand Air Force and shows up, in 1943 during World War II, at a military base with the order to board the next plane heading to Samoa.
Once on the ship, the crew, made up entirely of men, mocks the girl, does not believe a word she says and rejects her incessantly. Lieutenant Garrett, that’s what she calls herself, says she has a mission that is to deliver a rectangular wallet, the contents of which she cannot disclose but must protect at all costs and against any setback.
