Eddie Palmer (Timberlake) comes home after serving a twelve-year sentence for a burglary- turned- robbery- turned- attempt-to-manslaughter. Because he lost his parents himself young, he always lived with his grandmother Vivian (June – Nebraska – Squibb)before his conviction. When he returns there, he is welcomed with open arms, but he also sees immediately that his grandmother has a caravan on her ground, where the addict Shelly (Juno – Killer Joe , Wonder Wheel- Temple) lives with her umpteenth redneck boyfriend and her flamboyant son Sam (Ryder Allen). Palmer, as he wants to be called, has a hard time finding a job, but eventually manages to get a job as a janitor at his former high school. It all seems to be going in the right direction, until his grandmother dies and Shelly has left with the north sun. Quite against his tough wishes, he feels a responsibility to take care of Sam temporarily, and the building friendship between the two lies at the heart of the film. But what to do when Sam comes home with completely smeared make-up on his face, and it turns out that the perpetrator is not one of his classmates, but one of Palmer’s (former) friends.
