Earwig is based on Brian Catling’s book of the same name, which he sculpted before becoming a writer. From then on, Geoff Cox and Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s script and adaptation work appears to have consisted of cutting components of a novel that, according to them, was already fairly open and metaphorical. Hadzihalilovi, Lucile He only shows us a few drawings of the plot and leaves the rest to our imagination. There is a girl who lives in a large home and is cared for by a man who hardly interacts with her and collects her spit every day to manufacture ice teeth with her that he meticulously inserts into her.
Nothing, not even the characters’ relationships or the timeframe, is apparent or explained; rather, the film is more like a jigsaw with missing parts from which the audience may construct their own tale. Furthermore, something like this occurs in the film itself, with the existence of a picture in which, while it is the same for everyone, not everyone sees or believes they see the same thing.
