The Pale Blue Eye is a film adaptation of Louis Bayard’s book of the same name, starring Christian Bale and Edgar Allan Poe. In order to investigate an apparent murder at West Point Academy, a 19th-century detective (Bale) asks a young soldier (Poe, played by Harry Potter’s Harry Melling) for assistance.
Scott Cooper, who is also the film’s director, adapted the story. This is the third time Bale and the director have worked together; their most recent was 2017’s Hostiles, another movie with a 19th-century setting.
While Melling played Malcolm in Joel Coen’s adaptation of Macbeth, Bale is fresh off of his role as Margot Robbie’s and John David Washington’s love interest in David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. The cast is completed by individuals like Gillian Anderson, Toby Jones, Lucy Boynton, and Robert Duvall in addition to the two actors.
