Slavery was formally abolished in the USA in 1863. However, in many states, the situation is different; the black population continues to face discrimination, abuse, and forced labour. Many are left to consider whether they want to keep waiting for help or whether they have the courage to leave for one of the free states in light of this. Along with a few others, Peter decides to end their unworthy existence and instead flee. But because the slave owners are fighting tooth and nail to reclaim their property, the road is long and treacherous.
